Secondly, the torque characteristic of the gas turbine is much stronger than that of the diesel engine, and it can effectively simplify the gearbox design and improve the power transmission efficiency, which is very obvious for the improvement of off-road and acceleration performance. In addition, the weight of the gas turbine itself is only about half that of a diesel engine of the same power, so the lighter weight will also improve the maneuverability of the tank.

However, the disadvantages of gas turbines are obvious. The high price is a relatively minor factor. The biggest problem is the high fuel consumption. The extreme power output allows the tank to go extremely fast or accelerate at maximum speed, the fuel consumption of the gas turbine is almost the same as that of the diesel engine, and even has an advantage. In 60% of the running time, the tank engine is running at idle speed or low power state. The biggest flaw of the gas turbine is that the difference in fuel consumption between the minimum output power and the maximum output power is actually not much, as long as the engine is running, at least it has to burn that much oil. This is in great contrast to diesel engines. At idle speed and low power, the fuel consumption rate of gas turbines is 30%-70% higher than that of diesel engines.

Basically, high prices and high fuel consumption make it impossible for China to develop gas turbines in the short term. Only diesel engines will be used.

The idea of ​​developing the fourth-generation 890 series engine by MTU of Germany came into being in 1995. At that time, the US "Blue Ribbon" Committee invited MTU to conduct a feasibility study on a new type of high power density engine. Two years later, MTU came up with the design concept of the 890 series engine, and began to invest in the development of its own in 2000, and did not come up with the first prototype until the end of 2003.

Guo Tailai didn't want to collide with the 150HB series engine that is being researched in China. They will upgrade the power to 1500 horsepower in a few years, but this does not prevent Guo Tailai from taking out the MT890 series engine first.

The biggest feature of the MT890 series is high power density and integrated design. The integrated design can effectively reduce the weight and volume of the engine. The unit power weight of the 890 engine with high power density is only about 1 kg/kW. More importantly, the power density of this small-sized engine will exceed 1200 kW/m3.
