Chapter 179: Getting Rid of Suspicion
The priest decided to do it alone.
Clayton and the others had to return to the hotel and observe the priest's actions from the second floor.
But it was useless. Some tricks could not be understood by just looking at them, not to mention that there was a street between them and they could not see the details clearly.
Donna soon felt bored and sat on the bed at the side and sighed.
"Should we go somewhere else? What have you found now?"
Clayton retracted his gaze, stepped back from the bright light in front of the window, and sat on the chair opposite her.
"Danny, the son of a jeweler who has seen the original owner of the doomed jewel, knows nothing about the whereabouts of this employer. Sevan, the son of Father Louis, is suspected to have had a conflict with this employer by the river and is now missing. His father seems to know something about this, but he is unwilling to talk about it - this is why we are still here 'walking in the maze'."
"And there is a wizard who can erase people's memories by the river, and he seems to be observing this matter. In addition, there are people in the town who are full of malice towards us, but their identities are unknown. The rumor of werewolves in the town originated from a phonograph conch, but I don't know who made it, maybe it was one of the first two."
"And in the woods outside the city, there are beasts that are greedy for misfortune waiting for an opportunity to move. Last night, another evil creature also took us as a target."
Hearing her uncle's emotionless long narration, Donna's eyes widened.
"It seems that we have a lot of troubles."
"He hasn't gotten rid of bad luck yet, it's normal for everything to go wrong." Julius answered her.
Donna couldn't stand it anymore: "Let's go to the river, just take a walk."
She still hadn't let go of her suspicion of her uncle. The evil creature was the final form of a person tempted by the devil, and Clayton himself had hidden a devil in the study. She didn't want Uncle Clayton to be involved in similar things again.
"Do you have the confidence to deal with the wizard who can modify memory?" Clayton asked: "I don't know if he is hostile to us, but considering that I am in bad luck, this is uncertain. We can't wait until he becomes our enemy before we take precautions."
Donna was more reliable than he thought.
She stretched out her hand, palm up, and clenched her fist in front of Clayton. As she exerted force, some faint ancient words emerged from her wrist and formed a circle.
"Principal Fatia gave me a blessing that can resist this type of attack. And our fate is connected. As long as one of us is not hit, the other will not lose his memory."
Clayton immediately decided to meet the wizard.
People who kill people at the slightest disagreement are also a minority among the extraordinary. If they were careful, they might be able to communicate with each other in a friendly manner.
The wizard also thought this was the best possibility, but he didn't know whether Clayton's bad luck would make it happen.
Bang, bang, bang!
There was a sudden knock on the door.
Both wizards jumped in fright - they had just discussed a secret topic.
Clayton walked over to open the door, but saw another guy who didn't want to deal with him.
Ian Lazarus.
The young detective Hook stood at the door with a normal look, and it seemed that he had forgotten the little unhappiness between Clayton and himself.
"I'm sorry to bother you at this time, but I heard that you are a sheriff? We found a body on the private land of the detective agency, and I hope you can assist in the investigation."
No one in Gevorg knew the identity of Sheriff Clayton. He immediately concluded that this was told to the young man by Barbara, but he was not sure whether this choice was for an important purpose.
He answered Ian: "That's right, but Gevaux is not my jurisdiction."
The Sasha City Sheriff's Department sometimes switches the jurisdiction for the sheriff, but it takes them most of the day to get to Gevaux even if they ride fast horses, which is out of the scope of the city.
The detective is not used to forcing people, he took off his hat and pressed it on his chest.
"I still hope you can go and see the situation. We have brought the body back. Someone recognized that it was a trainer of a traveling circus. Well, he seemed to be killed by a werewolf. Have you encountered such a situation in Sasha City?"
Clayton looked back, but Julius also showed a look of astonishment.
"Lead the way." He said helplessly.
Since Clayton came to Gevaux, whenever he wanted to do something, there were always some unexpected things that distracted him.
But this matter cannot be ignored.
The Hook detectives found the body he left behind and claimed that it was done by a werewolf. If Clayton had a little bit of reason, he should not choose to stay out of it and let others dispose of the body.
It would be bad if they really found out who the murderer was.
Detective Hook parked the body on the main road outside the town, attracting some people to gather around.
The patrol team of Gevaux also came, and Clayton saw the goatee he met when he first came to Gevaux. The old man looked at the body with a thoughtful look.
Barbara and her husband Pero also stood aside, and the latter's expression was not very good.
Donna was too short to see the body on the ground over the crowd, so she ran to talk to the female vampire family.
They just learned from the detective that Ms. Barbara found the body with them.
Clayton thought that Donna might be able to get first-hand information from her, so he ignored Donna and walked straight to the center of the crowd.
"The sheriff is here!"
He raised the silver star badge and shouted. The crowd quickly parted and made way for him and Julius. He was able to see the body lying on the road. The dead man was indeed the trainer who died in his hands. That was right.
However, the trainer looked different from the last time they parted. Someone had strung his two torsos together with thin iron bars, and a disc was stuffed in his chest.
He took out his handkerchief and walked forward, half squatting to examine the body.
On the other side, old Perot stared at Julius, indignant for the earlier deception.
"Why didn't you say you were sheriffs earlier? I thought you were gangsters."
Julius spread his hands and shrugged, but said nothing.
If the old man knew that one-third of the permanent sheriffs in the Sasha City Sheriff's Department were manipulated by the personal connections of the Presbyterian Church and other parish council members, his spiritual world would definitely be severely traumatized.
The elected sheriff brought a lot of fame and credit to the Sheriff's Department, while the resident sheriff was responsible for squandering these virtual assets.
Beside them, Barbara and Donna's whisper time gradually came to an end.
The girl left Barbara contentedly and turned to go to her uncle to see the body, but Julius pulled her back.
Donna stared at him: "I'm not afraid of dead people."
The wizard raised his eyebrows and loosened his fingers from her shoulders. He had no obligation to be a babysitter for the little girl.
Donna walked through the crowd to Clayton who was examining the body, but she only took a look at the dead body. The terrible scars and the empty face had occupied her entire mind, not to mention the dissected abdominal cavity and the iron bars piercing and the blasphemous scenes of iron sheets inlaid.
The girl felt powerless and panicked from the bottom of her heart. Her hands supported her uncle's back, and her waist bent down. As her stomach moved uncomfortably, tears welled up in her eyes.
The dead body that was murdered is different from the body that died of natural causes. She overestimated herself.
The patrolman's goatee immediately noticed her reaction. He slammed the ground with his cane and roared:
"Who asked this little girl to come?"
This sudden action saved Donna. She was frightened and her desire to vomit stopped abruptly.
Before Clayton could speak, the goatee glared at her: "This is not something a little girl should see. You should go back to your parents to practice needlework instead of staying here to watch the fun."
The word needlework reminded Donna of the miserable state of the corpse, and she wanted to vomit again.
Clayton stood up and supported her: "She is my daughter." He turned his head and called Barbara to come and help Donna away. The goatee nodded with satisfaction.
"How is it? Mr. Bello, do you see what you have gained now?" Detective Ace asked him.
"I don't see any scars caused by the werewolf's claws."
Clayton answered truthfully because he killed the trainer with an axe.
The only dead person in the circus with werewolf bite marks on his body was the clown. In order to erase the marks, he smashed the entire head of the corpse.
Ian asked: "So besides werewolves, what other creatures can easily bend thin iron bars to achieve such an effect?"
"Such a thin iron bar, if an adult male sticks one end into the ground and uses his weight to force it, it is easy to cause such a bend. And, if the werewolf killed him, then what was it for? Food? I don't think so."
The lieutenant raised his hand slightly and pointed at the corpse, attracting everyone's attention.
"Look, there are only bird peck marks on his soft internal organs, and there is no wound on his fat thighs. The only things missing are his eyes and clothes. The real focus should be the property that disappeared with the clothes. I concluded that a well-built robber killed him, and this robber knew that there were rumors of werewolves in the town, so he forged such a wound to highlight the extraordinaryness of the deceased. All this is just to cover up the truth that he killed people and robbed them."
"This wound that cut him in two seems to be very smooth, which is impossible for ordinary people. But who has ever heard of werewolves doing this? Can their claws do such a thing?"
Of course, the claws of werewolves can't do such a thing, but a long-handled double-edged axe can do it.
The goatee looked at Clayton: "I'm not saying this because I have a personal grudge against you, but I remember that you brought a very large axe. If it was such a wide and long axe, a strong man like you would chop it with all your strength, it might cause such an injury."
Reasonable doubt, Clayton didn't hide it from anyone when he carried the axe to the street.
The detectives and patrolmen stared at him, but they didn't immediately identify him as the murderer. Because they couldn't think of a reason why Clayton killed the trainer, nor did they think that anyone would really use such a large axe as a weapon.
Clayton knew their thoughts very well, and he also had a way to further convince them and eliminate his own suspicion.
These people didn't understand the characteristics of the [Mosquito Slayer].
"Even if I can do such a thing, then a person who was chopped in half would bleed all over the ground. But this body looks very clean, and there are even signs that it was bled before death." Clayton squatted down again and showed the onlookers the slightly dry wound on the body.
After the animal dies, the blood will quickly coagulate in the blood vessels, and it will not look so clean. This is common sense.
"You can think about it, is it easier to chop a living person who might move around with an axe, or to bleed the living person to death and then process his inflexible corpse?"
This defense is well-reasoned, and people soon believed it.
"Poor guy" Goatee shook his head and sighed. He was the most skilled hunter in Gevo, so he could be the leader of the patrol at the age of 60. Everyone believed that even if he couldn't catch the "beast", he could reduce the frequency of wild beast intrusions. However, during this period, he not only got nothing, but the "beast" attack on the stable also made people gradually lose hope and no longer expect him to make achievements.
Now he wants to catch something more than anyone else. Whether it is the "beast" or the "robber" disguised as a werewolf, he only needs one.
A young man in the patrol made a cross on his chest and sighed for the dead.
"This is a trainer. The circus he belongs to is not far outside the town. Our people have already notified them. I hope they can come to collect the body of their companion. If they don't want to take him away, our cemetery still has space."
